Simsbury Rugby to Kickoff Season on Sunday

The club will kickoff its sixth season against Staples High School

The Simsbury High School Rugby Club kicks off its sixth season on Sunday March 25 at 1 p.m. at the Simsbury High School Turf Stadium. 

The  team will start it’s  2012 season against Staples High School, a tough competitor that Simsbury beat last May to capture third place in the 2011 state tournament.

The Simsbury High School Club  has over 50 boys and 21 girls participating  in Rugby this Spring and with its no cut philosophy  the numbers may balloon even higher after other teams begin to trim their rosters.  

The team is led by captains Luke Bradley, Brendan Taylor, Garret Crowe, Luis Torres and , Alex Malayev. The team is also counting heavily on returning players, Ken MacCormac, Dan Zupin, Lucas Day, Brian Poggio, Matt Taylor, Will Majeska, Matt Poomprakobsri, David Gurtcheff, Gerald Nelson newcomer Brad Helmkamp.

"The team is returning some key players on both the Boys and the Girls squads and are expectations are high to make a run at both State Titles," Head Coach Ed Matteo said. "We will face some very tough competition with every team getting better and national power houses  Greenwich and Fairfield Prep in our division . But we continue to improve as a club and played both of those teams very tough last season and expect the same in 2012. " 

The team plays in the very competitive Division 1 level of Connecticut Rugby Union. Simsbury High School Rugby Club will play host Staples on Sunday March 25,  Southington on Thursday April 12, Fairfield Prep on Saturday May 5,  and Fairfield High School on Sunday May 13. The team will also travel to Darien, Greenwich and Cheshire to round out its regular season.      

The Simsbury Girls team is lead by captains Caitlin Wing,  Emily Hitt, Jazmine Schwapp are ramping up to defend its Connecticut Girls High School Rugby Championship.   The girls will host Southington High School on Thursday April 12 on the High School Turf.
