The Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary is accepting applications for the Bowman-Kerr Ladies Auxiliary Scholarship

The Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary is now accepting applications for the Bowman-Kerr Ladies Auxiliary Scholarship. This scholarship is commemorative of two women who have given back to the community of Simsbury with a total of over 300 years combined volunteer work.

Lucy Bowman volunteered on the Simsbury Volunteer Ambulance for over 30 years and is currently in her 51st year as a member of the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She is also a 40+ year volunteer on Simsbury’s Public Safety Committee; was active in the local, state and national levels of Homemaker Home Health Aid Service for 20 years until it was absorbed by the Visiting Nurses Association; a Girl Scout leader for 7 years and co-founder of Simsbury’s Meals on Wheels program.

Marion Kerr volunteered with the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary for over 50 years; the Simsbury Historical Society for 25 years and was deaconess of First Congregational Church in Canton Center.

Both women have been honored as a Simsbury Hometown Hero.

This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who exemplifies the volunteer spirit of these two women. The scholarship will be presented at an auxiliary function held in June. Preference will be given to an applicant who is an active or past member of the Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company, Simsbury Fire District or an immediate relative (spouse, guardian, parent, child or grandchild) of a volunteer in one of these organizations, who has not previously received the award. An applicant not meeting the aforementioned criteria, may qualify by being a Simsbury resident with a volunteering background, who is entering an accredited Fire, Police or EMS program, This scholarship is not limited to high school students, but the applicant must be accepted by or currently enrolled in a program.

The last day for consideration is March 27th, 2014. Applications are available at Simsbury High School, the dispatch office at Simsbury Fire Headquarters or may be downloaded from the SVFC website at www.simsburyfd.org.
