Two Events in June at Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge

A fundraiser and a day of free yoga classes are two June events that will be held on the Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge, on Old Drake Hill Road, off Hopmeadow Street.

The annual “Burgers on the Bridge,” is set for this Wednesday, June 12, from 4:30-7pm. (Rain date: June 13.)

Then on Friday, June 21, Valley Yoga and Healing Center will offer seven classes beginning at 8am to celebrate the Summer Solstice, which is the longest day of the year.

At “Burgers on the Bridge,” there will be live music and an assortment of cook-out style food: beef and veggie burgers, hot dogs, chips, wine, beer, soda and homemade desserts.

Note cards and a painting by Catherine Elliot depicting the bridge will be available for purchase.

Proceeds will be used to maintain and improve the Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Forty-two brightly colored flower boxes line the bridge railings and 32 baskets of annuals hang from the trusses, as well as two perennial gardens at the bridge entrances, all cared for by a volunteer committee.

The free, 60-minute yoga classes on June 21 will be offered every two hours: 6am, 8am, 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. They are suitable for all levels, beginner to advanced.

A Potluck Picnic will follow the last class. In case of rain, classes will move to Valley Yoga, located on 730 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury. Registration is not necessary, but those attending should bring a yoga mat and water.

“It’s quite an experience to practice yoga outside the studio environment, surrounded by nature,” said Maggie Rueda, one of the Valley Yoga instructors. “Being out on the beautiful flower bridge, hopefully in the sunshine, is the perfect way to celebrate Summer Solstice.”
