Additional Moose Sightings in Simsbury, Elsewhere

The moose spotted and photographed on the campus of Westminster School on May 17 was also seen in other parts of town that day and Avon the next, said Andrew LaBonte, wildlife biologist with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

That day, sightings were reported on Crestwood Road and the intersection of Hoskins Road and Ely Lane, he said.

The next day it was seen on Country Club Road and Carriage Drive in Avon.

LaBonte said the moose is likely a yearling or two-year-old but did not known sex, age, or weight. Bull Moose shed their antlers in the winter and grow them again in the Spring.

He said it is the same animal that had been spotted around the Valley and West Hartford recently.

LaBonte believes there are anywhere from 100 to 150 moose in Connecticut, and this is the time of year when people are most likely to see them. In Connecticut the best chance of seeing one is in the Hartland area, near the MDC reservoir, he said.

"Typically moose are pretty solitary, except during the time of year when the offspring are dispersing, or when they are mating," LaBonte previously told Patch.

At this time of year, the moose that were born last year are leaving their mothers and heading off on their own, he said.

LaBonte urges anyone to report a sighting on DEEP's website.
