Organization Ready to Again 'Light Up the Night for Simsbury'

Sale of luminary kits raises funds for local organizations, provides for a visually appealing evening.

The Simsbury Junior Woman's Club is once again planning its Luminary Night to benefit a host of local organizations.

The effort involves the sale of luminaries are used to "light up the night for Simsbury" on a given evening throughout town. Weather permitting that will be Dec. 1.

"It's a visually appealing night but it serves a very real purpose," said Becky Mahoney, SJWC Co-President.

Last year, a total of $14,000 was distributed to the likes of the local PTOs, the Simsbury Department of Social Services, Gifts of Love, the Simsbury Land Trust, and many others. Mahoney said 100 percent of the funds go to local groups. That's been almost $50,000 in four years, she added.

Kits, which contain 10 luminaries, are $15 each and can be ordered through Nov. 23 at http://www.simsburyjuniors.org/ or purchased at Fitzgerald's Market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 24.

Weather permitting luminaries can be lit beginning at 5 p.m. on Dec. 1. In the case of inclement weather visit http://www.simsburyjuniors.org/ for updates.

Mahoney said nearly 10,000 were lit last year and this year the club is excited that many downtown businesses are getting involved.
