Simsbury Joins Bike to Work Day Effort

In an ever-expanding effort to increase awareness of two-wheeled transportation, Simsbury will host one of several Bike to Work Day events throughout the state the morning of Friday, May 17.

"It's important for Simsbury to build awareness," said Pattie Smith Jacobus, co-chair of the Simsbury Bicycle Advisory Committee.

The group, along with the Simsbury Department of Parks and Recreation, is sponsoring the event from 6:30 to 9 a.m. Friday on Iron Horse Boulevard near Rotary Park.

It will be the first time the town has held an event for Bike to Work Day.

The event will include coffee and bagels, a chance to win gift cards and an opportunity to talk to other cyclists and town officials. Jacobus said a fourth-grade class from Squadron Ride School will be among the riders.

Jacobus said the goal is to raise awareness, promote the various programs the organization offers and help the effort to improve the town's 2010 bronze level Bike Friendly Community designation from the League of American Bicyclists. The hope is to improve that to silver status, Jacobus said.
