Simsbury Speaks Up: Do You Wait with Your Child at the Bus Stop?

Are fewer kids walking to the bus stop alone nowadays? Do you think it's best if parents walk to or watch over the bus stop? Patch asked, and you answered!

Inspired by a drive up Route 32 earlier this week, during which one Patch editor saw very few unattended students waiting to be picked up for school, Patch asked parents, 'do you walk with your kids to the bus stop?'

Well, Simsbury has answered!

According to the Simsbury Facebook page, it seems that parents are split on the issue.

Here's what Simsbury parents had to say:

  • "I drive my son everyday because 6:50 am is about 40 mins to early for us both...lol As a child, my bus stop was about 50 feet from my house, so I would just run out the door. I imagine the location of the bus stop, perhaps any bus stop that is out of view of the home has bearing on weather or not the parent is present. However I think its great additional time to spend with your child, and I admire parents that do this with their kids. It does fade with time as they get older, because we then become an embarrassment! To add, TV shows and the reality of life also plays a part, to know that our child is safe and on there way is a good feeling at the start of our day, as we are aware of how quickly there safety unfortunately can be compromised."
  • "In Avon (grew up in Simsbury though) Either wait for the bus or more often drive my daughter to school myself. In the afternoon, grandma (retired) waits at the bus stop. Scary times, even in the Valley."
  • "Sadly they have to because of all of the crazy people out there!!"
  • "Avon. Drove my Son to school for 2 years because my Son was bullied on the school bus even when he sat up front!"
  • "No but lucky that the bus stop is at our house. But this morning we had to watch out cuz of a bear sighting in our neighborhood."
  • "We always wait with our kids at the bus stop even though it is at the end of our driveway."
According to the CDC, fewer kids are also walking and biking to school nowadays. An overwhelming 87 percent of children who lived within a mile of their school in 1969 biked or walked there, the CDC reports, but that number fell to 63 percent in 2001.

The CDC cites increasing distances between student's homes and school buildings (due to a decrease in the number of schools) and parental fear of violent crime as contributing factors.

Do your children walk themselves to school? How about to the bus stop? Let us know in the comments!
