Simsbury Student Continues Effort to Help 'Wounded Warriors'

3rd Annual Bake Sale for the Wounded Warrior Project set for May 27.

With a father who serves in the Air National Guard, Haley Latorre’s military connection is strong.

“He’s my hero,” the local seventh grader said of Lt. Col Ron Latorre, USAF.

Haley was further inspired when he and others told her about the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps veterans with a wide range of services, including the transition back to civilian life. She read a number of personal stories on the organization’s web site.

“It really touched me how they express the emotions of being in war and where they are now,” she said.

At the time Haley was a 5th grader at Squadron Line, and with help and encouragement from some friends and family, organized and promoted a bake sale. It raised $1,500.

“It was one of the best decisions I’ve made” she said.

Last year, the event was held for the second time and netted some $2,000.

This year she hopes to do even better.

The 3rd Annual Bake Sale for the Wounded Warrior Project will take place May 27 from 11 a.m. until Simsbury’s parade ends. It will be held in the Martocchio Music parking lot, 1 Massaco Street, Simsbury.
