Enter Storm Alfred, taking up weeks of our time — first with the loss of power and any “normal life as we know it”, and then, to add insult to injury, weeks of catching up after the storm — clearing brush, raking, and anxiously waiting for FEMA trucks to appear on our streets, among other tasks.
We just return to some sense of normality, and then Halloween hits. (In November, no less!) Thanksgiving crops up out of nowhere, and here we are, staring at the calendar, just now realizing that the New Year is a week away.
New Year’s Day is a perfect time to celebrate those individuals who helped us cope with the last months of mayhem, so let’s not forget our friends, family, and neighbors. Hosting a New Year’s Day Open House is a great way to show your appreciation. It doesn’t have to be fancy or over-the-top. Simplicity is key. Let those folks know how much you appreciate them — this past October, and throughout the year.
Use the following outline as a guideline — so it is easy on you as well.
New Year’s Open House
Guest list: Among your “usuals”, be sure to include neighbors, friends and acquaintances that helped you during the storm and after.
Set a guest invite and end time: If you are offering hors d’oeuvres only, make sure they are hearty enough to replicate a meal. Otherwise, invite guests for dinner and drinks. Keep it simple.
Menu: Pork tenderloins served with a mustard sauce, brown and wild rice pilaf, rolls and a salad would be an easy but delicious menu. The rice can be made ahead and reheated, and the tenderloins take little to no time to cook. Or — make two different kinds of soup and as assortment of sandwiches. Let guests help themselves when they are ready to nosh.
Enlist help: Ask your guests to bring an hors d’oeuvres or dessert to cover all the bases. We’re sure, after seeing the response of our community, that they will be ready, willing and able to pitch in where they can.
Enjoy: A simple menu and a positive attitude are a must. After all, we’re in this together.
