Custom Clothier Shop Opens in West Hartford Center

"Dressed to the Nines" offers men's custom suits, shirts, sport coats – even cashmere sweaters and jeans.

Just when you think West Hartford Center has it all, along comes another unique business.

“Dressed to the Nines” held its grand opening Wednesday night at 994 Farmington Avenue, next door to Liberty Travel. The store is a concierge custom clothier shop for men and offers custom tailored suits, shirts, sport coats, pants, topcoats, formalwear, and accessories.

Owner Bob DeGemmis said he offers clients handmade cashmere sweaters and even jeans and belts. He also sells a line of silk ties from Italy. Prices range from $895 and up for a custom suit to $149 and more for a custom shirt.

“We do it all except for shoes, socks and underwear,” DeGemmis said with a laugh.

DeGemmis is the third generation of the DeGemmis family to “help gentlemen look their best.” Bob’s grandfather Alfredo, a custom tailor in Italy, emigrated to Connecticut in 1916. He settled briefly in Torrington and eventually opened one shop in Hartford and another in Glastonbury.

DeGemmis grew up in Glastonbury and now resides in Stratford. He owns a studio in Shelton, and his tailors work out of several different locations. The West Hartford store is his second retail location.

“I think there’s a need in the Greater Hartford area in terms of quality men’s clothing,” noted DeGemmis. Many of his new customers are referred to him by existing clients. Often, they are professional men looking to be dressed in fine fabrics that are well-tailored. Some are particular, others are difficult to fit, and still others are reluctant to shop. DeGemmis offers a complimentary consultation in customers’ homes, offices or in his store.

DeGemmis said Dressed to the Nines “helps professionals to build a wardrobe that makes a powerful statement while saving valuable time.”

DeGemmis was upbeat, happy and all smiles at Wednesday evening's ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by Mayor Scott Slifka, members of the West Hartford Chamber of Commerce and friends.

“I’ll never have a day of work because I love what I do,” DeGemmis said.
