Safety Comes First At Gracie Farmington Valley, GFV Fitness

With two separate facilities, Jay Bell offers a variety of fun and fitness options but there's one overriding priority — safety.

"Our focus first is on safety," he said. "If you add strength on top of poor movement it's a recipe for disaster."

For about two years, Bell, a 1992 Simsbury High School graduate, has operated Gracie Farmington Valley in the Mill at Tariffville. It offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and other martial arts forms for children and adults.

More recently he opened Greater Farmington Valley (or GFV) Fitness, which features small-group, instructor led fitness workouts.

For Bell, one of the advantages to owning both has been the ability for people to take advantage of several classes and combinations. There's even a family plan under which all members of a family can use both facilities for $300.

Parents, for example, could work out at the fitness facility while their children take a karate class. Mom or dad can also use both facilities.

"That's been pretty cool," he said. "It offers a little bit for everybody."
