Plenty of Winter Gear Available at Bicycle Cellar in Simsbury

Fat bikes and snowshoes provide some seasonal fun.

Winter may not seem to be prime season at the Bicycle Cellar but the shop has some fun and seriously impressive seasonal gear — two wheeled and otherwise.

One Bicycle Cellar winter offering is snowshoes, including a premium made-in-the USA brand as well as a more economical line.

For the serious runner or those looking for a lightweight trail shoe, the shop carries several models of Vermont-made DION Snowshoes.

In addition to features such as aircraft grade aluminum frames, optimized size and teflon coated cleats on some models, manager P.J. Gronski likes the fact that several bindings and cleats are available, allowing users to customize the shoe.

"It's completely modular," Gronski said. "It's a very cool system."

Topping $200, the snowshoes are not for everyone. For the more economically minded or casual user, the store offers Yukon Charlies, starting at $59 for a youth model and running up to $99 for a backcountry snowshoe.

For the first time this year, the shop is offering Surly fat bikes, starting at $1,700. The oversized tires and tread on these models make for fun adventures through snow, mud and other terrain. The frames on these models do not feature suspension but playing with tire pressure can make for a fun, smooth ride in a variety of conditions.

For snow riding a semi-packed surface works best, Gronski said.

Some cyclists even use them year round.

"It's a blast," Gronski said. "The fat bikes are really exploding right now."
