Police to Increase Patrols at Simsbury Cinemas in Wake of Colorado Shooting

Simsbury Police are increasing their presence at Simsbury Cinemas as a precautionary measure.

State and local police will be increasing security at movie theaters across the state following the horrific shooting that occurred during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" at a Colorado theater in which 12 were killed and at least 50 injured.

Lieutenant Nicholas Boulter, spokesman, said there haven't been any reports of threats of violence at the but they plan to monitor the theater closely.

"We have increased our patrols at the theater," Boulter said.

A 24-year-old gunman, initially identified as James Holmes from the Denver suburb of Aurora, is in custody and suspected of opening fire in a crowded movie theater near Denver, killing at least 12 people and injuring some 50 more, according to the Huffington Post.

The suspect was reportedly heavily armed, carrying upward of six rifles and handguns, and wearing a bullet-proof vest.

The additional coverage at Simsbury Cinemas was not requested by the theater's management but is  a precautionary step being taken on by Simsbury Police.

"Most of the time we take these steps on our own initiative," Boulter said.

The Simsbury Cinemas theater management had no comment when contacted by Patch.

The local theater did not screen a midnight show for the opening of "The Dark Knight Rises," but has several showings scheduled for today and throughout the weekend.
