EMC Delivers Results for Connecticut Energy Savings Initiative

Connecticut is on a mission to drive down energy prices. Motivated to shed its recent reputation as an expensive place to buy energy, the state is making significant headway in becoming more energy efficient. Last year it cut energy use by 285.8 million kWh, resulting in an annual cost savings of $53.4 million. Businesses and city agencies delivered roughly 45% of the savings.

EMC lighting conversion projects with four big box retailers contributed to this accomplishment. Working with Connecticut agencies like Connecticut Light and Power, City of Wallingford, and United Illuminating, EMC helped the retailers reduce energy consumption by more than 4,770,000 kWh per year, resulting in an annual savings of more than $720,000. In addition to lowering energy costs, the companies optimized project paybacks by realizing more than $765,000 in rebates.

Connecticut encourages businesses to implement multiple energy-saving measures simultaneously because it provides a higher return on investment in the long run. EMC’s EnergyMAXX delivery model is ideally suited to achieving this objective, giving customers a comprehensive view of all their options.

“Through rebates and other incentives, Connecticut has created an ideal environment for our customers to improve the quality and performance of their lighting infrastructure,” said Jerry Johnson, president and CEO of EMC. “The state’s message is clear: ‘Now is the time to consider an energy audit and upgrade.’”

According to Energy Efficiency Markets, Connecticut’s achievements are in keeping with a larger trend in New England. The six states spent almost $2.3 billion on energy efficiency from 2009 to 2012 and ISO New England forecasts they will spend another $6.4 billion from 2017 through 2023.

EMC has contributed significantly to New England’s achievement. Projects to date have saved almost 78 million kWh, resulting in an annual savings of $2.9 million for the region.
