Simsbury Residents Living Near the Farmington River are Asked to Evacuate by 4 p.m.

The river is expected to reach flood stage by noon Sunday, causing road closures. Power outages in town have been reported and trees are down.

The Farmington River is expected to reach flood stage in Simsbury by approximately noon today — Sunday, Aug. 28 — and town officials are anticipating that affected roads will be closed by 5 p.m. 

The town — which has opened its emergency operations center — is encouraging affected residents to vacate their dwellings by no later than 4 p.m. Emergency personnel will not be able to reach affected locations after 5 p.m.

CL&P reports that of the 10,098 customers in Simsbury as of 9 a.m. 5,569 were without power, or 55 percent.

There have been reports of trees down. Residents are reminded to stay away from and power lines that have come down.

The police are asking that anyone driving take precautions near intersections if traffic signals are not working. If the traffic lights are out, the recommendation is to stop prior to entering the intersection if the traffic lights are not working, regardless of the normal flow of traffic. Proceed with caution.
