Murphy Visits Tariffville

The Congressman made a stop to show his support for the efforts to keep a post office branch in the village.

About a week after residents held a rally to save the post office in Tariffville, at which a representative of U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy attended, Murphy made a visit to Tariffville.

“Congressman Chris Murphy made a special visit to Tariffville on Monday to meet with town leaders and executive board members of the Tariffville Village Association to discuss the status of the Tariffville Post Office,” said Deputy First Selectman John K. Hampton. “The congressman listened to concerns and reassured those in attendance of his continued support for maintaining a post office in Tariffville.”

Murphy, welcomed by Hampton at the Gazebo on the Village Green, toured the town center and chatted with local residents and business owners.

Members of the Tariffville Village Association had an opportunity to brief Murphy on other initiatives, including final design plans for the Green, completion of the bike greenway, and events related to the Tariffville Gorge.

After an emergency suspension in February due to structural concerns with the building, the U.S. Postal Service has not reopened a branch in Tariffville.

Tariffville residents who had post office boxes now need to travel to the main post office in Simsbury at 932 Hopmeadow Street for a post office box. Those who have mailbox delivery need to go to the other post offices in town for postal business. There are now three open post offices in town. The Simsbury center location is the town’s main post office.

Hampton is working with the offices of U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal and U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy in the fight to keep a branch in Tariffville and continues to be in contact with postal representatives.
