A new bike rack, created to complement the Simsbury Bike Sculpture, has been added to the courtyard of the Simsbury Library.

“It’s quite lovely,” said James Miller, Head of Adult Services at the library. “People like the fact it’s not just a bike rack, that this is also a work of art. We’re getting a lot of positive comments.”

The bike rack was created by Simsbury-artist Vicente Garcia. He incorporated several visual elements from the bike sculpture, which was installed this spring on the corner of Hopmeadow Street and Winslow Place in Weatogue.

“It’s great to have the library added as another bicycle-friendly, town location,” said Simsbury First Selectman Mary Glassman, referring to Simsbury’s status as the first Bicycle-Friendly Community in Connecticut.  “We support efforts like this that help draw residents and visitors to our town center.”

Two bike racks were installed in May at the The Simsbury Bank branch on Hopmeadow Street. Simsbury United Methodist Church is working with Garcia to create a bike rack for the church.

Other locations, including Fitzgerald’s Plaza, are currently being explored, according to Ann Marie Potter of Bike Walk Simsbury!, who spearheaded the bike-sculpture project.

“I’m delighted to see more bike racks popping up around town,” she said. “They’re a visual testament to Simsbury’s commitment to be truly bicycle-friendly.”

She noted that accessible bike racks have a practical value as well. “If people have a safe place to park their bicycle, they may be more inclined to use it for an errand, or stop by the center for a cold drink after a trail ride.”

Miller pointed out that he sees benefits for young and old.

“I see kids riding their bikes to the library after school, and they’re not dependent on their parents to bring them in,” he said. “Adults can get a little exercise and not be confined to their cars, which is always a good thing.”

He added: “And the courtyard is much prettier.”
