Nearby Town Was Originally Part of Simsbury

The town of Simsbury was first known as the Massacoe Plantation and was also briefly spelled "Simmsbury"

When a petition was first granted to recognize Simsbury as a town in 1670, the region, known originally as Massacoe Plantation, actually included two neighboring towns, according to the Simsbury Historical Society.

Simsbury was the twenty-first town to be incorporated in the state of Connecticut and only 16 years later residents of the northern villages of Salmon Brook and Turkey Hills were granted their petition for incorporation and formed the town of Granby in 1676.

In 1806, Simsbury was once again divided when the town of Canton was incorporated.
