Simsbury residents already saving over $50,000 in drug costs

through CCM Prescription Drug Discount program

The Town of Simsbury, through its association with the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities (CCM), , has saved Simsbury residents more than $54,000 in prescription costs since joining CCM’s Prescription Drug Discount Program last September when the Town of Simsbury launched the program.

That represents a 45 percent savings over what these Simsbury residents would have paid for the 1,157 prescriptions filled thus far; and the town-wide savings and use of the cards by residents is expected to grow significantly in the coming months.

“Simsbury hit a home run with this program,” said Mary Glassman, Simsbury First Selectman. “The usage and savings by residents will only continue to grow with each coming month. Many families are struggling and even families with health insurance may not have all their prescriptions covered. CCM’s program helps our residents save money and get needed medicines.”

Simsbury was among the first CCM-member towns to offer the program.

Since CCM began offering the “CCM Prescription Drug Discount Card” program last September, 105 towns and cities have signed up for the program -- and in 12 months, residents in 90 participating communities have filled over 30,000 prescriptions and saved over $1,634,000 on the cost of their prescription medications.

The program is free to any CCM-member town, providing savings on any prescriptions not covered by insurance. There are no costs to either the participating municipalities or their residents.

“CCM-member municipal officials know that many of their residents face the challenge of high cost prescriptions,” said Jim Finley, CCM Executive Director and CEO. “Over 100 CCM-member towns, such as Simsbury, are using the CCM Prescription Discount Card to offer prescription savings to their residents who are without health insurance or a traditional pharmacy benefit plan, or have prescriptions not covered by insurance.”

Cards can be used by all town residents regardless of age, income or existing health coverage.  There are no enrollment forms, membership fees, restrictions or limits on frequency of use for residents.  There is easy access to the program. Residents either received a card through the mail or can print out a card easily by visiting www.CTRxDiscountCard.com, and selecting the Town of Simsbury from the drop-down menu. The discount cards are widely accepted at all national chain pharmacies and most local independent pharmacies.

The program is administered by ProAct, Inc., an experienced discount card provider, who negotiates discount rates directly with participating pharmacies.

Discount cards may also be used to save on human-based medications prescribed for family pets that can be filled at participating retail pharmacies.  Discounts are also offered on other medical services including vision, Lasik and hearing services.
