SHS Crew Claims Triple-Gold at the CPSRA Regatta on May 18; Team Wins Seven Medals

The SHS Crew Team 1st Boys, 1st Girls, and 3rd Boys boats rowed for gold at the Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association Regatta at Lake Waramaug in New Preston, CT on May 18. Overall, the team brought home three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. The day was sunny and clear, with a 10-15 mph headwind and gusts ranging up to 25 mph.

The SHS 1st Boys claimed gold in their race with a time of 5:10.7, 6.7 seconds ahead of Glastonbury and 19.5 seconds ahead of third-place East Lyme. The 1st Boys boat crew includes: Alex Picken (coxswain), Nicholas Carabillo (stroke), Jack Polizzi, Billy Fahan, Brendan Murphy, Daniel Sparks, Zachary Korten, Calvin Krikorian, Trey Proctor (bow).

Seizing their gold in a tight race, the SHS 1st Girls boat won with a time of 5:48.6, 2.9 seconds ahead of second-place Farmington and 3.6 seconds ahead of third-place Glastonbury. SHS 1st Girls boat crew members include: The winning crew includes: Brenna Kelly (coxswain), Helen Moore (stroke), Rebecca Grandahl, Caroline Hendershot, Kaitlyn May, Allison May, Elizabeth Austin, Stephanie Sickinger, and Carolyn Croke (bow).

The 3rd Boys powered to a first-place finish with a time of 6:03.5, 9.1 seconds ahead of second-place Glastonbury and 14.4 seconds ahead of third-place Stonington. The 3rd Boys boat crew includes: Danielle Osborne (coxswain), Jeremy Morrison (stroke), Jack Reid, Charlie Croke, Christopher Palms, Tucker Salls, William Jahne, Chris Jackson, and Brendan Richardson (bow).

The equivalent of state championships for public school rowing, the CPSRAs were first organized in 1999, and include 12 rowing teams from Connecticut public schools; the competition provides races for both eight-seat and four-seat boats.

Simsbury brought eight crews (Boys 1-3, Girls 1-3, and Novice Boys and Girls). Other schools that competed in the championships included Avon, E. O. Smith, East Lyme, Farmington, Glastonbury, Guilford, Lewis Mills, Litchfield, Lyme-Old Lyme, Middletown, and Stonington.

The SHS 2nd Boys boat received a silver medal in their race with a time of 5:50.7, 10.4 seconds behind 1st-place Glastonbury and .1 seconds ahead of third-place Stonington. The SHS 2nd Boys boat crew includes: Joseph Corollo (coxswain), Charlie Olson (stroke), Alexander Marcktell, Kevin Oleskewitz, Jacob Lauben, Sam Kelly, Daniel Peluso, Justin Anderson, Sean Harris (bow).

The SHS Novice Girls boat obtained silver with a time of 6:54.8, 5 seconds behind first-place Glastonbury and .4 seconds ahead of third-place Avon. The SHS 4th Girls boat crew includes: Morgan Pfaff (coxswain), Briana Gaffney, Sophie Levesque, Kelly Englisby, Joan Nicholson, Nellie Hund, Bianca Santiago-Douglas, Taylor Jackson, and Samantha Page (bow).

Strong rowing propelled the SHS 2nd Girls boat into third place with a time of 6:39.7, 4.9 seconds behind second-place Farmington and 14.9 seconds behind first-place Glastonbury. SHS 2nd Girls boat crew members include: Jill Henrich (coxswain), Rachel Harris (stroke), Jane Henrich, Maxime Braun, Michela Zunino, Abigail Fleming, Keira Manser, Heather Schiller, and Emily O’Donnell (bow).

The SHS 3rd Girls boat took bronze in their race with a time of 5:02.0, 5.8 seconds behind first-place Farmington and 5.7 seconds behind second-place Glastonbury. The SHS 3rd Girls boat crew includes: Rosemary Wallace (coxswain), Emily Fritz (stroke), Bethany Hamlin, Anna Paquette, Ana Ashchepkova, Giuliana Marchetti, Kerry Doran, Hannah McKelvey, and Sasha Faizal (bow).
