SHS Crew Seizes the Tabor Cup at the Simsbury/Tabor Invitational

Simsbury had a spectacular day of racing at the Simsbury/Tabor Invitational on April 12, taking back the Tabor Cup with a boat either winning or placing in each race. Racing from a floating start, the SHS 1st Varsity Girls took first place in the 1,500-meter race, beating Tabor by 2.2 seconds with a time of 5:36.5. The winning crew includes: Brenna Kelley (coxswain), Helen Moore (stroke), Rebecca Grandahl, Allison May, Kaitlyn May, Caroline Hendershot, Lizzy Austin, Stephanie Sickinger, and Carolyn Croke (bow).

The SHS 3rd Girls also placed first in a very tight race, with a time of 5:38.2, beating second-place Shrewsbury by 1.5 seconds. The 3rd Girls Boat crew includes: Jessica Sherry (coxswain), Emily Fritz (stroke), Bethany Hamlin, Anna Paquette, Sasha Faizal, Guiliana Marchetti, Kiera Manser, Hannah McKelvey, and Kerry Doran (bow).

This traditional duel between Simsbury and Tabor Academy was formalized in the late 1980s. This race began as a traditional duel race between Simsbury and Tabor Academy. The Tabor Cup trophy is named for Charles A. Pincombe, a team supporter who sculled and helped remove fallen trees from the river.  While competition for the cup remains between the two original schools, other crews joining the season kick-off regatta included Boston Latin, East Lyme, Shrewsbury, St. Johns, Stonington, and Xavier.

This year’s racing day was sunny, with a cross-tail wind, changing to a cross wind, with increasing with gusts throughout the day. Due to the wind, not all races started on the line. In the 2nd Boys race there was a collision between Simsbury and Tabor at the 750 mark. Tabor moved into Simsbury's water and then both crews continued racing.

Overall, the SHS 1st Varsity Boys boat finished second, with a time of 4:46.8. The 2nd Varsity Boys and 3rd Boys Boat both finished third with times of 5:12.4 and 5:25.7 respectively. The Varsity Girl’s 2nd Boat finished second in their race, with a time of 5:50.9.
