The SHS Crew Team swept the Erg Throwdown on Saturday, March 22, winning the event trophies and taking top honors for all the boats. Simsbury crews competed with other top crews including: Avon, East Lyme, E.O. Smith, Glastonbury, Middletown, and Stonington at the indoor rowing competition at the Mystic Branch of the Ocean Community YMCA in Mystic, CT. This annual precursor to the spring racing season pits racing boats against one another. However, instead of racing on the water, team members sit on individual ergometers (rowing machines). The ergs are electronically linked, so the times recorded for individual participants are tallied together to create racing times for the boats. Rowers in all races rowed for a distance of 2,ooo-meters.

The SHS 1st Boys won their race with a time of 6:58.3, ahead of second-place Glastonbury. The winning crew includes:  Nicholas Carabillo, Billy Fahan, Calvin Krikorian, Owen Massing, Jack Polizzi, Jack Reid, Tucker Salls, and Dan Sparks.

In an exciting race to the finish, the SHS 1st Girls tied for first place with Glastonbury, with a time of 7:56.5. The SHS 1st Girls crew includes: Maxime Braun, Carolyn Croke, Rebecca Grandahl, Caroline Hendershot, Allison May, Kaitlyn May, Helen Moore, and Michele Zunino.

Strong rowing propelled the SHS 2nd Boys to first place with a time of 7:23.2, ahead of second-place Glastonbury. The SHS 2nd Boys crew members include: Justin Anderson, Nicholas Carabillo, Sam Kelley, Jake Lauben, Alex Marcktell, Jeremy Morrison, Kevin Oleskewicz, and Jack Reid.

The SHS 2nd Girls raced to a strong first-place finish with a time of 8:25.8. The SHS 2nd Girls crew includes: Ana Ashchepkova, Sasha Faizal, Abigail Fleming, Emily Fritz, Bethany Hamlin, Rachel Harris, Jane Henrich, and Anna Pacquette.

Individually, SHS junior Caroline Hendershot took second overall for the girls with a time of 7:42.4, and SHS senior Billy Fahan finished third overall for the boys with a time of 6:43.2. For a full listing of the race results, check out www.simsburycrew.org.
