Strong Showing for Simsbury at the Kent and Middletown Reggatas

It was a busy weekend of racing for Simsbury crews as they participated in the Kent Invitational and the 6th annual Middletown Novice Regatta.

Battling adverse conditions and several New England rowing powerhouses, Simsbury crews put up a valiant effort at the Kent Invitational on Saturday, May 11. This regatta, which takes place annually at Lake Waramaug in New Preston, CT, dates back to the mid-1980s. In addition to Simsbury, participants included Salisbury School, Brunswick School, the Connecticut Boating Club, Farmington, East Lyme, Sacred Heart, and Kent School.

The SHS Girls Novice Boat came in second place in their race with a time of 5:45.5, 13.9 seconds behind the Connecticut Boating Club. The SHS Girls 2nd Boat came in third with a time of 5:30.4, 12.5 seconds behind second-place Kent. SHS Boys 1st, 3rd, and 1st Novice boats all came in fourth in their respective races.

Winds shifted during the second day of racing on Sunday, May 12, at the Middletown Novice Regatta in Middletown, CT. All Novice boats raced at this double-elimination tournament, which gives novice rowers a minimum of two and maximum of four chances to race. The day started out with favorable conditions, with a tailwind in the morning, shifting to a headwind in the afternoon.

Simsbury’s 1st Novice Boys boat prevailed in its first heat against Litchfield and its second against EO Smith. However, an equipment malfunction hindered the crew, and they lost by 1.42 seconds to Glastonbury in the semi-finals. For a full listing of the race results, check out www.simsburycrew.org.

Simsbury Crew’s upcoming racing schedule includes:
• CPSRA Regatta, New Preston, CT, May 19
• NEIRA (for qualifying crews), May 24/25
• Novice Regatta, Farmington, CT, May 29
