Martin Luther King, Jr. in CT Fundraiser

     PLEASE HELP US MAKE OUR DREAM COME TRUE !!!!

Simsbury will be home to a permanent memorial of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the impact that the two summers he spent as a young migrant worker on a tobacco farm here in Simsbury had on him and on his call to ministry.

A year or so ago, two dozen Simsbury High School students researched, scripted, and produced a video documentary of the two summers that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spent here in Simsbury. We students were honored for our work in producing the documentary at the 2010 Martin Luther King, Jr. Gala in Connecticut, with Gov. Dannel Malloy, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman in attendance. In addition, the documentary garnered numerous awards and national recognition, including being televised on CBS News and covered by the Associated Press.

We are now embarking upon a project to raise $200,000 dollars to create a permanent memorial in Simsbury of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our project is off to a great start, as we have already received a generous donation from Cigna in the amount of $20,000! We also have secured support from the Simsbury Historical Society through their agreement to site the memorial on a prominent Main Street corner of their property in the heart of Simsbury, across the street from one of the churches where Dr. King sang in the choir on several Sundays and next door to the building that was the drugstore where he and other Morehouse students sat at the lunch counter and enjoyed “milkshakes.”
