In a Weekend with Many Sports Headlines One Stands Tall...or Kneels Actually

Tim Tebow continues to impress.

I am quite sure many people are tired of hearing about Tim Tebow. I suspect it is the same crowd that was tired of hearing about him before he ever put a chin strap on in an NFL game. But how can you not marvel at what he has done?

In a weekend which featured the defending Super Bowl champs pulling a victory out of the fire to stay perfect at 12-0 on the season, along with Tiger Woods winning his first tournament since the car crash outside his Florida home which led to revelations of his extra-marital adventuring, the Tebow story is sports' most compelling.

In an NFL era of pass-happy offenses, Tebow seems very misplaced, as a quarterback who does not have a particularly strong arm and at times is woefully inaccurate. A quarterback who thinks run first, pass second, or third, or 10th. Still, he has something. Some sort of intangible quality which seems to will his team to victory.

Perhaps God really is on his side. How else can you explain what he has done. He has led a team that seemed to be on its way to a sub-500, irrelevant, season, to a tie a top its division looking poised to make the playoffs or maybe even capture the division.

Even more inexplicable than his performance as a starting quarterback (6-1) is the negative reaction he seems to provoke. I cannot recall an athlete who has been this successful and received this much derision. Some of it has come from his own front office. John Elway, the Broncos team vice president, and hall of fame quarterback, was asked after a recent win if he felt his team had found its quarterback. He said no. This despite the fact that Tebow's first season as a starter in the NFL has been better by every statistical measurement than Elway's. Not to mention the fact that Elway, as Tebow boss, may want to strike a more positive tone about his own player. So the question needs to be asked. Why does Tebow have so many haters?

If you have any ideas please let me know. I have some theories, but I am more interested in hearing from some of you. Please post a comment.
