KO Girls Win Two New England Championships

Two Kingswood Oxford teams won New England Championships on May 18: The Softball team clinched the Western New England Class B title, 14-4, while the Girls’ Tennis team beat Berkshire, 6-3, in the NEPSAC B title.

It was the Wyverns' first Softball title since 2009.

The Softball team, the #1 seed in the tournament, beat the #2-seeded Wilbraham & Monson Academy, thanks to commanding performances at the plate and on the mound.

KO scored five runs in the first  inning – four of which came from a grand slam home run by Jackie Dufour '14 (her second this season) – and never looked back. Dufour is headed to St. Lawrence University, where she plans to play softball.

Many other players also contributed offensively: Taryn Braz ’14 went 4 for 4 for the second day in a row in tournament play; Cam Dias ’15 went 3 for 4 with a home run and two singles; Issie Pratt ‘17 was 3 for 4 with a single, double, and home run; and Dufour had a double and triple, in addition to the grand slam, to name just a few.

Braz – who will play for the Providence College Friars next year -- pitched a strong final game of her KO career. She allowed only one earned run, struck out six, walked one, and gave up nine hits.

Meanwhile, the Girls’ Tennis team faced a very strong Berkshire squad, after beating Brooks School in the semifinal round, 5-0, on May 17.

The Wyverns’ victory was fueled by wins at #1 singles (Melissa Lord ’15), #1 doubles (Lord and Olivia Shea ’16), and #4 singles (Shea).

In addition, the #2 doubles team of Allie Perron ’16 and Morgan Risinger ’16 won their match handily, capping their undefeated season at that spot. Nicole Galik ’17 had two big wins, as well, playing at #5 singles and at #3 doubles with Faith Pease ’17.

"We had a great team win over a talented squad from Berkshire," said Head Coach Ron Garcia.
