Over 200 Latimer Lane Students Bike/Walk to School

Latimer Lane School’s Bike/Walk to School Day on May 8th, National Bike to School Day, was a huge success.  Despite threatening skies, 226 students (half the student body) elected to bike or walk to school.  With just 45 students considered “walkers” by district standards, the turnout was commendable. In addition, teachers, staff, parents, and distinguished guests participated bringing the total number of bikers and walkers to over 300.

Latimer Lane families were honored to be joined by First Selectman Mary Glassman, who biked to school with the students, and Selectmen Sean Askham, Nancy Haase, Lisa Heavner, and Shannon Knall who walked with the children.  Additionally, Simsbury Bike Advisory Committee member Larry Linonis of Simsbury Free Bike and Sharon Okoye of Connecticut Safe Routes to School participated.

The Latimer Lane Safe Routes to School Committee would like to acknowledge that we received tremendous support from the Simsbury Police Department, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Simsbury Public Schools Central Office, and the Bike Advisory Committee.  Additionally, The Bicycle Cellar, Ridgeline Bikes of Avon, Bikers Edge, Eastern Mountain Sports, Simsbury Free Bike, Farmington Valley Trails Council, TCBY, and BurgerFi donated raffle prizes.  The Connecticut Safe Routes to School Program also provided support services and small gifts for student participants.

Latimer Lane School’s Safe Routes to School Committee hosted Bike/Walk to School Day as a celebration of National Bike to School Day, an event that promotes health, green living, bike and pedestrian safety, and community connections.  Safe Routes to School is a national initiative dedicated to improving conditions around schools so that more children can safely walk and bike to school, promoting healthy lifestyles and a healthy earth.
