Junk Food! 8.30.13
Junk Food is presented by Free Lunch Studios and featured in The Patch. Steve and Matt have been collaborating on comics since they were in high school, and are honored to have the opportunity to showcase their work to the readers of Patch.
I was really excited for this strip for two reasons...one was Jack "the King" Kirby's birthday was this past Wednesday and it would be great for us to pay tribute to him. The other reason was to draw (or NOT draw) The Invisible Woman (a Kirby/Lee creation) in the strip in a creative way.
My initial thought was to draw her with the dotted line contours, the way she was drawn originally in the Fantastic Four comics. After that, I thought I'd draw her in blue line pencil and just not ink her. Funny, right? The problem there would be ONLY the people that saw the original art would actually know she was actually there. Finally, I settled on a compromise...I would draw the whole image in blue line pencil, ink everything except Mrs. Richards and then scan the final art twice. One scan would be the clean one, in bitmap or line drawing mode...no blue lines showing, only inks. The second, in grayscale mode, picking up all the lines, blue line pencil or ink (including "The Invisible Woman").
Could I have just photoshoped her? Sure. But I really liked the idea of her not being there...
