This Saturday! Revolutionary War Cavalry at the Historical Society!

Love history?! Love horses!?  Then don’t miss Simsbury Heritage Day at the Simsbury Historical Society! On Oct 5, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Revolutionary War Second Continental Light Dragoons (“Sheldon’s Horse”) will offer a chance to experience the life of a common cavalry soldier. As a part of Simsbury Heritage Day, the Dragoons will present history as it should be experienced – Live!

Sheldon’s Light Dragoons “strives to impart to the public an understanding of the sacrifices made by past Americans and the conditions under which they lived.”  Their hope is to convey an authentic sense of this period while instilling a sense of pride in our citizens.  During the course of the day, they will present sword drills, dismounted Dragoon drills, mounted exercise drills, and crossed sabers cavalry demonstrations.

Children can participate in period games and take part in drilling. Tours of the Phelps Tavern, the 1790 School House, the 1683 replica Meeting House and 19th century Ensign-Bickford fuse-making equipment will be offered during the event.

The original Second Continental Light Dragoons had Simsbury connections; 24 men from Simsbury served in Sheldon’s Horse.  During the winter of 1780, a regiment of the Second Dragoons withdrew from the front in Westchester, NY to Simsbury and Windsor for winter quarters.
