Reunited: Missing Dog Motek Found After Remarkable Efforts of Local Community

Remarkable Efforts of Local Community & Social Media Bring Motek Home

Nitai Gur and Brooke Angus of Boston, MA were celebrating their wedding in Mexico, while friends, Chris McElroy and Heather Carlson, of Avon, CT watched their dog, Motek, a female Boxer.  While hiking on 2/5/14, Motek ran off and got lost in the woods of Talcott Mountain State Park.

Chris and Heather spent the entire night and well into the day searching for Motek. By noon on 2/6/14, Chris and Heather posted on Craigslist and Facebook about Motek’s disappearance. Within hours, volunteers from CT Animal Recovery- Friends of Zoey—a volunteer animal rescue group—stepped in. They created a Facebook Page: “Bring Home Motek in Simsbury” and distributed fliers to help spread the word.

Volunteers from across New England alerted the media, animal shelters, veterinary clinics, local shops, social media, and neighbors of search efforts to find Motek. K-9 Search and Rescue Dogs from Packleader Pettracker helped search the area and narrow the region where Motek may be.

Nitai and Brooke flew back home from their honeymoon two days early to assist in the search effort.

Family, friends, and volunteers rallied together to conduct a massive search and rescue mission on Saturday morning. The rescue unfolded live on Facebook through tips from a vigilant hiker and multiple sightings of Motek moving down the mountain, towards Avon Old Farms Hotel.

Motek was reunited with her family within minutes of her rescue. Miraculously, Motek only suffered minor bruising and frostbite after three days alone in the freezing winter weather. She is now resting safely at home with her family and friends!

Nitai Gur, Brooke Angus, their family, and friends are forever grateful for the many volunteers and the local community for their efforts that brought Motek home.
