Updated: Criminal Sex Charges Filed Against Windsor Board of Ed Member

Windsor Board of Education member Christopher Watts was charged with attempting to entice a 14-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity via the internet, according to the United States Attorney's office.

Watts, the U.S. Attorney's office says, responded to a chat-room posting on an unidentified "public Website" that said "dad has daughter."

The online posting was made by an undercover officer investigating the particular website Watts was allegedly using.

The U.S. Attorney's office says Watts, 38, told the undercover officer having sex with a 14-year-old girl was a "big fantasy" of his, sent an explicit photo of himself, and then traveled to Brevard County, FL, where he was taken into custody.

According to NBC Connecticut, the Florida criminal complaint filed in court says Watts used the Website under the screen name "luvpervymoms," told officials that he "had a hyper-sexual problem" and had a history of "viewing videos and images of children in sexual acts."

If convicted, he faces a minimum of 10 years to life in federal prison.

Windsor Public Schools representative Laura Soll said Friday district staff and administrators are just finding out about the news now, and it's unlikely that an official statement will be realeased.

"If it's true this would sadden us," Soll said, adding that Watts, who has served on Windsor's Board of Education since 2005, is a very involved member of the community.

In addition to serving on the Board of Education, Watts served as chair of the Windsor Historic District Commission, the Assisant Director for the Vintage Radio and Communications Museum of Connecticut and as ex-officio member of the Windsor Education Foundation, which raises money for technology and education programs in the town's public schools.

According his bio the Windsor Education Foundation Website, Watts is also a former editor for the Associated Press and a former press secretary for Connecticut's House Democrats.

Watts was relected to the Board of Education in 2011's municipal elections.

He moved to Windsor in 1997, is married and is a father.

United States Homeland Security, the Brevard County Sherriff's office and the Windsor Police Department are involved in the investigation.

Calls to several Windsor Board of Education members and Windsor Democratic Town Committee members were not immediately returned Friday.
