Flower Thieves Strike Historic Simsbury Bridge

The Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge is a landmark in town, its beauty is enjoyed by many. Some of that beauty has been disappearing lately, bit by bit.

WFSB reports that thieves have stolen flowers and plants from the site and are strategically covering up the holes with dirt. According to WFSB's report, 27 plants have been taken, most of them maroon and yellow in color.

Residents are upset because some of the flowers have been planted in memory of loved ones. The replacement cost exceeds  $100 and the Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge Committee said installing security cameras would detract from the bridge's natural beauty.

Jan Lintner, secretary of the Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge Committee said: "It's just very discouraging that someone comes along and picks them for their own personal use." The volunteer group works on planting, weeding and maintaining the area.

The Old Drake Bridge is so well-known for its beauty that it was recently recognized as 2014 “Editor’s Choice” winner in Yankee Magazine’s Travel Guide in New England.
