[Update] IDs Confirmed in Wednesday Night Shooting Deaths in Simsbury

The identities of a young couple that died after a double shooting in Simsbury earlier this week have been confirmed.

Elizabeth Day, 24, and Michael Wawrzyniak, 25, were both pronounced dead at the scene of a murder-suicide on Wednesday at apartment 2-A-2 at The Meadows apartment complex in Simsbury.

According to preliminary findings from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Day died of multiple gunshot wounds caused by Wawrzyniak. Wawrzyniak's death was ruled a suicide caused by a single gunshot wound to the head.

Wawrzyniak, a member of Canton High School class of 2005, and Day, a member of Canton High School class of 2006, were living together with Day's 18-month-old boy in a modest one-bedroom apartment at The Meadows in the south end of Simsbury.

The young couple had lived in Simsbury for approximately 18 months, according to police.

Wawrzyniak had been an employee of Michael's Carpenter Ant & Termite Services in East Granby since June 2012, according to Brian Verrengia, operations manager at the company. Verrengia offered no further comments about the former employee.

Wawrzyniak had no prior arrests or restraining orders, according to court records.

Day worked at Ocean State Job Lot in Canton for the past five years, said store manager Bob Kyser.

"She was really well loved," Kyser said, adding that she was very friendly and an excellent worker. 

Kyser called the shooting "senseless."

"We're praying for her family," he added. 

Day had also been enrolled in classes at Central Connecticut State University from 2007-2010 studying education and arts, according to the university registrar.

According to her 2006 yearbook, Day loved taking videos, camping, getting lost and going on road trips.

Her yearbook message also quoted from “Nothing I Can Do About it Now,” a song popularized by Willie Nelson.

The message ends with “I know just what I’d change if I went back in time somehow but there’s nothing I can do ‘bout it now.”

In his 2005 yearbook, Wawrzyniak references a love of cars and the hip-hop group G-Unit.

Residents at The Meadows remembered the couple as quiet and most said they kept to themselves.

When police received a frantic 911 call from Day on Wednesday, she told the dispatcher that her live-in boyfriend, Wawrzyniak, was pointing a gun at her and officers were immediately dispatched.

"While she was on the phone, the dispatcher heard two distinct rounds being fired and a scream from the woman who was on the 911 line and the phone went dead," Police Chief Peter Ingvertsen said.

When officers arrived at 51 Hopmeadow Street and approached apartment 2-A-2, where the young couple lived, they heard a child crying inside.

“The officers decided that they weren’t going to wait for the EST team to respond. The Simsbury officers basically broke into the home and discovered two bodies on the floor,” Ingvertsen said. Both a male and a female were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are continuing the investigation in hopes that they can determine the events that led up to the tragic shooting.
