Lost Something? Did You Try Calling the Police?

The Simsbury Police Department posts a found property list of items it wants to see reunited with their owners.

Elizabeth Sagan is a matchmaker of sorts. If you’ve lost your cell phone or car keys, she wants to reunite the two of you.

As the records clerk for the , she creates the list of found property and posts it online. She has been posting such items for a few months, part of several new offerings the police department is making available online.

In addition to found property, weekly police blotter information is posted, as is the sex offender registry list and the updated pistol-permit application.

The found property list is updated about once month or so, said Sagan. On a recent list were eight mountain bikes, a ring and a camera, among other items. Due to liability concerns the town can no longer donate these items after a period of time, but instead sends them to the dump.

Sagan said it’s “unbelievable” how many bikes end up in found property and go unclaimed.

None of theses items have anything to do with items that were stolen; that is a completely different issue and those types of items are returned through the detective division. Found items are just that — residents may notice a pair of bikes that have not moved for several days and call it in, or a cell phone is found and turned in. In the case of cell phone, if the phone is locked the department has no way of accessing numbers to alert the owner.

“Keys and cell phone and stuff like that — it’s not cheap to replace,” said Sagan. “We do everything we can.”

There are two ways to access the list online: on the town web site go under departments and then law enforcement, there you will see a tab that says ‘found property’ and when you select it the option to download a pdf file will appear.

Another link is under public information and records, click on that and it opens up another window and again you’ll find the found property list

The found property list contains a brief description, when the department obtained the item and where it was found. An incident number is given to each item for reference. If you think an items is yours, call the records division at 860-658-3125.

“The more things we can get back to their owners the better,” said Sagan.

The police blotter is posted on Friday of each week and includes the information from the previous Friday to Thursday.
