Police: Hiker in Critical Condition After Fall at Tariffville Gorge

A young man is in critical condition after he fell while hiking at Tariffville Gorge.

A local man is in critical condition after he fell from a cliff at the Tariffville Gorge Recreation Area in Bloomfield, according to the Bloomfield Police Department.

A 20-year-old male was hiking or rock climbing near the gorge in Bloomfield when he fell nearly 150 feet, police said.

When police arrived on the scene at approximately 5:52 p.m., the man was suffering from "compound fractures of his limbs and open wounds, as well as internal injuries," a statement said. The man was conscious as emergency medical personnel attended to his injuries which were determined to be life-threatening.

The man was transported by helicopter to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford where he remains in critical condition, police said.

Bloomfield police are investigating the accident but preliminary reports say that the man slipped before falling.

Bloomfield Police, Bloomfield Volunteer Fire Department, and Bloomfield Volunteer Ambulance responded to the incident. Simsbury Police, Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company, and Simsbury Volunteer Ambulance assisted at the scene.
