Ready, Set, Get CT Alert …

The police department wants you to sign up.

On October 29, the October snowstorm struck Connecticut causing severe damage and 100 percent power outage to the Town of Simsbury. The impact of this storm lasted well over one week. Conditions were dangerous; snow covered roads, downed trees, wires and power lines. Access to residents was limited by hazards and roadway obstructions. This storm occurred only two months after Tropical Storm Irene, which also impacted the state and caused damage and hazardous conditions.

Recognizing an impending storm or hazard and knowing what to do to protect yourself and your loved ones is crucial during an emergency and will aid in the recovery after the event. To prepare for the unexpected, create a supply kit, develop a family emergency plan, keep up to date with news and weather and sign up for emergency alerts.

The various disasters our country has faced this year underscore the need for an effective plan and well-tested emergency alert and warning systems. Communication is critical for such situations and we encourage residents to sign up for ctalert.gov, a statewide emergency notification system that may also be used for local emergency notifications. By signing up for CT Alert, residents can receive emergency based cell phone messages, text messages or e-mails. Participants have the ability to add multiple addresses and phone numbers increasing the probability the information will be received. This can be completed quickly with access to a computer;

  • Go to ctalert.gov
  • Click on “Register for alerts” on the left of the screen
  • Read the user agreement and click “I understand”
  • Click “sign-up” and create an account with a username and password
  • Follow the prompts to complete the account (multiple addresses and phone numbers can be inserted to ensure message is received)
  • Once completed, the account user will be sent a “successful” message

For computer access and/or assistance registering for alerts, visit the reference desk at the or the at Eno Memorial Hall. The staff at both locations can provide access to the website and assist you with registering for the alerts.
