Residents React to Fatal Double Shooting in Simsbury

Residents of The Meadows apartment complex in Simsbury are in shock after a double fatal shooting took the lives of two of their neighbors Wednesday night.

What most are describing as a relatively quiet apartment complex, nestled at the foot of Talcott Mountain in the town's south end, has been buzzing with activity as police and news media have been attempting to piece together the events that unfolded on Wednesday.

"This is a quiet complex," resident Lou Delbone said. Delbone, who has lived at The Meadows for nearly 15 years said the incident was a shock to the small community.

"It definitely caught me by surprise," Delbone said.

Simsbury Police received a domestic disturbance call late Wednesday night and by the time they arrived a young man and woman were both dead. The two were in their early to mid-20's and shared a son who is approximately 18-months-old, according to police.

An unidentified resident who spoke with Simsbury Patch Wednesday night said she heard two gunshots that were followed by a frenzy of police activity.

Police shed new light on the moments before those fatal shots were fired during a press conference at Simsbury Town Hall on Thursday.

Kevin Liu, who lives next door to the couple, said he heard a loud noise but was unaware of what was happening just a few yards from his door at unit 2-A-2.

"I didn't know it was a gunshot, it's very scary," Liu said.

Liu has lived at The Meadows for approximately 5 years and was familiar with the couple, but like most residents of the 91 unit apartment complex, he knew very little about them.

"They were very quiet, they never talked," Liu said. "It's one of the scariest things I've seen since I've lived here."

Michael Quinn, superintendent at The Meadows since 2011, said this type of incident is highly unusual for the community.

"It's just shocking. It's a very quiet place," Quinn said.

Simsbury Police are continuing their investigation and hope to piece together the events that unfolded 24-hours prior to the shooting. Autopsies are expected to be conducted on Friday and police will not release the names of the victims until their identities are confirmed.
