Simsbury Father Sentenced to Five Years for Injuring Infant Son

Christopher Berman, 29, fractured his son's tibia in September 2012.

Christopher Berman, 29, plead guilty to risk of injury to a minor on Monday for injuring his infant son in September 2012, the Hartford Courant reports.

Berman plead guilty under the Alford doctrine, the Courant said, which means that he disagrees with facts in the prosecution's story, but would rather take a plea agreement than go to trial.

He was sentenced to five years in jail and five years probation, according to the Courant.

Berman was charged after fracturing his 9-month-old son's leg in September. While his son was being treated at the hospital, doctors also discovered healing bruises on the baby's spine, torso and buttocks.

Police also looked into a July 2012 incident during which the child went into cardiac arrest. The cause of the arrest is unknown, but police report that Berman admitted to handling his son "in an aggressive and abusive manner within 30 seconds of [his son] suffering this medical emergency," according to the warrant.
