Simsbury Police to Hold Heroes and Hounds Drive for U.S. Troops

Heroes and Hounds drive will be held on Friday December 14, 2012.

Submitted by the Simsbury Police Department

The Simsbury Police Department is proud to host its third annual Heroes and Hounds Military Working Dog Drive.

This year we are proud to announce that the Simsbury Police Department will be shipping over one hundred and twenty individual care packages to our men and women actively serving our country overseas during the holiday season.

Each care package contains several items for the soldier and their K9 working partner. These packages will be transported to Westover Air Force Base by the Simsbury Police Department where they will be shipped to our soldiers in the Middle East.

This drive could not occur without the tremendous and generous support of the Town of Simsbury residents, business owners and Town employees.

We are glad to say that we also had great support from many residents and businesses in surrounding communities, such as the Windsor Pet Food Pantry, Fidelco, the Bass Family of Meriden, employees of CitiGroup (Hartford), Horses and Hounds and a generous monetary donation from a resident of New Jersey.

The Department would like to invite members of the media to police headquarters on Friday December 14, 2012 at 10:00 AM to help us honor and support our troops.

Items still needed are large Kongs, rope tugs, sturdy large dog chew toys and healthy treats made in the US. Keep in mind that the recipient dogs are large breed dogs so the sturdier the toy - the better. Each package contains supplies for a specific handler and their bomb dog. The program is not set up as a mass shipment of supplies to somewhere. Each package has a soldier's name on it and will be shipped to that soldier. The recipient soldiers are k-9 handlers who work with explosive dectection dogs in war zones overseas. The dogs are instrumental in helping keep our soldiers safe. Please consider picking up some of the needed items and dropping off this coming week at Simsbury Police Department. This is truly a worthy cause to support our country's Heros and Hounds!
