From the Candidate: Simsbury Citizens First

For the 2011 campaign, Simsbury Patch asked candidates to send a 500-word statement or a one-minute video. Election Day is Nov. 8. Simsbury Citizens First sent its own version, as there are three candidates and they are all for land use commissions.

Thank you Simsbury citizens!

Simsbury Citizens First party wants to congratulate everyone for helping each other through one of the worst weather years in our history. It is not over yet, but hopefully soon, we will all have electricity and life can get back to normal.

Our proud tradition of neighbor helping neighbor continues. For over 300 years Simsbury has been at the forefront of supporting its citizenry. Whether its Captain Phelps in 1776 marshaling its citizens at what is now Abigail's restaurant to support its sons marching off to Boston to fight the British or citizens helping each other out in other natural disasters like the devastating 1955 flood.

We now have probably heard neighbor helping neighbor stories arising after Storm Alfred. For example, the residents of one Tariffville road waking up Sunday morning and seeing their road blocked by downed trees gathered together at the end of the road in utter disbelief but almost as quickly sprang into action with comments like ... "if you hold the baby, I will get the chain saw and carve a through lane in that tree blocking our street." Soon, the one lane through the trees was a reality. We all should be proud how well we stood up in the face of adversity.

Simsbury has one of the highest levels of volunteerism in the state if not the country. Simsbury Citizens First wants to preserve this proud tradition, independent spirit, and the character of Simsbury as we grow in the future.Notwithstanding the recent economic downturn, Simsbury has a bright future.

We at Simsbury Citizens First will fight to help to grow Simsbury and retain what we cherish. We hope you will give us your support by voting on Nov 8 for Cathy Brown for zoning board of appeals, and Rick Wagner, Jr. for planning commissioner, and re-election of Bruce Elliott as zoning commissioner.

Thank you, Bill Walsh, chairman, Simsbury Citizens First.
