Hampton Announces Candidacy for State Representative

Deputy First Selectman joins the race for the 16th District State Representative seat.

 

A small crowd gathered on the grounds of the on Wednesday to support Deputy First Selectman John Hampton as he officially announced his candidacy for 16th District State Representative.

Hampton was joined by First Selectman Mary Glassman, Selectman Lisa Heavner, Democratic Town Committee Chairman Jeff Tyndall, his family, friends and supporters as he officially stepped into the race for the 16th District seat being vacated by State Rep. Linda Schofield.

"There's no question that John Hampton puts the people of Simsbury first," Glassman said.

The 45-year-old Tariffville native has served as a town selectman since 2003 and Deputy First Selectman since 2007. Glassman highlighted Hampton's efforts in bringing about the Senior Tax Relief program, his involvement with the Tariffville Village Association, and his dedication to helping residents during winter storm Alfred.

"He was there every step of the way. Staying from morning to night overseeing our emergency operations, working in the shelter, rolling up his sleeves, and that's who John Hampton is. He is somebody who will be there for you, has been there for you, and will be there in Hartford for all of us," Glassman said.

Heavner said Hampton is know for his availability to Simsbury residents and his involvement and dedication to the community.

"John is not beholden to any interest groups. He is a representative of every member of the town of Simsbury," Heavner said.

Heavner also recognized Hampton for initiating the Clean Energy Task Force in Simsbury, working to protect the environment and promoting green practices.

Hampton told the crowd he planned to bring the same fiscally conservative practices he has developed in Simsbury to the state house in Hartford. He pledged to work to improve education, strengthen the economy, bring jobs to Connecticut, and improve the state's emergency procedures.

"Difficult times call for trusted, experienced leadership," Hampton said.

"John Hampton is doubly equipped to represent Simsbury well.  As a life-long Simsbury resident and a town public servant of many years," State Rep. Linda Schofield said. "As a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, Aging & Disability Commission and Board of Selectmen, John is acutely attuned to Simsbury residents and their views.  In addition, John worked in the legislature as a staffer, so he goes into the job knowing how to get things done there.  John is a kind, articulate, smart man whose candidacy I endorse."

Hampton is joining the race for the the 16th District seat along with Republican candidate Charity Folk and independent candidate Robert Kalechman.
