In her nominating speech, First Selectman Mary Glassman cited Hampton’s years of experience, compassion and dedication to the town.

“I am honored and proud to nominate my friend, my right hand, my Deputy John Kennedy Hampton for Simsbury’s State Representative. John loves this town and has served this community incredibly well; during these difficult times, we need John Hampton standing up all for all of us at the State Capitol,” Glassman said.

In his remarks accepting the nomination, Hampton stated:

“This election is bigger than me… It is about all of the wonderful people of Simsbury, not just a chosen few. There are many issues to address, not just one.

We must address improving education, restoring our economy, protecting our senior citizens and safeguarding our environment.

As the only candidate in the race with extensive experience in government, I know first-hand that there is nothing "simple" about government. It is complex, takes hard work, and requires listening to divergent groups of individuals and careful consideration of their points of view.

Good leadership requires thoughtful debate and consensus building. It calls for sound fiscal principles that limits burdens on it citizens.

I believe that I am the only candidate that can bring those skills to the General Assembly. This is not a "learn on the job" position.  I am prepared and ready to go on “day one” to go to work for Simsbury.”

Selectman Lisa Heavner seconded the nomination, highlighting Hampton’s work helping senior citizens, his initiatives promoting clean energy and preserving open space.

“John Hampton has always been there for Simsbury. John is proven leader you can trust. He is clearly the best qualified to represent Simsbury in the CT General Assembly,” said Ms. Heavner.

Mr. Hampton has been a member of the Board of Selectmen since 2003 and Deputy First Selectmen since 2007; he is a former member of the Zoning Board of Appeals & the Aging & Disability Commission.

A native of Tariffville, Selectman Hampton serves as Chairman of the Simsbury Public Safety Subcommittee and is a member of the Personnel Subcommittee.

Mr. Hampton served on the staff of Connecticut’s Speaker of the House from 2000 to 2004, clerking a committee, drafting legislation and handling constituent concerns.

“Tonight, I begin an extraordinary journey on behalf of the town I love, my hometown. I am excited about the race and buoyed by your friendship and support. Let our campaign message be heard all across the 16th District," Hampton said.
