Public Hearing to be Held on Water Company Rate Hike

Simsbury officials asking PURA to reject increase of almost 20 percent.

Residents will be able to weigh in on Aquarion Water Company’s plan to raise rates at a public hearing on July 8 at Eno Memorial Hall, according to the Farmington Valley Times.

The plan, according to the Times, calls for a nearly 20 percent rate increase over three years.

The meeting in Simsbury will be held at 6:30 p.m.

The controversial plan, which calls for a 16.8 percent rate increase statewide to address, among other things, infrastructure issues, was met with opposition from Simsbury town officials.

“While Simsbury appreciates the need to adequately fund the requirements of a modern, reliable, water infrastructure system, the 16. 8 percent proposed increase is unacceptable,” states a March letter sent by the Board of Selectmen to Aquarion and the Public Utility Regulatory Authority. “The proposed rate increase will unduly burden residents and businesses still struggling in this economy. Aquarion must do more with less.”

The proposed rate increases would take effect in September 2013.
