Selectmen Approve Waiving Tax Refunds or Amount Due if Under $5

The measure passed unanimously.

The board of selectmen voted unanimously Monday night to approve an ordinance to allow the tax collector to waive property tax refunds or taxes due if they are under $5.

The suggestion for the measure came from residents, said First Selectman Mary Glassman. Residents who have gone through the back and forth of paperwork and mailings to receive say a $1.50 refund. The sentiment was the refund was hardly worth the postage.

“A lot of towns do already have it,” said tax collector Colleen O’Connor at the selectmen’s June 13 meeting when the board discussed the idea.

It was noted that some towns waive $25 or less. O'Connor told the selectmen the dollar amounts falling under the $5 for this year totaled $490 that the town is owed and $55 in refunds.

There is paperwork and a process involving several boards that goes into each refund. If a resident does not respond to the first note notifying there is a refund available (he or she has to sign for the process to being) then another note is sent and another.

The ordinance is effective as of June 27, 2011.
