Simsbury Budget Referendum Scheduled for May 14

Simsbury residents will vote on the $18.35 million selectman budget, a $64.9 million education budget, and $12.8 million in appropriations on May 14.

The following was posted on the Town of Simsbury website regarding the 2013 Budget Referendum:

The Town of Simsbury Board of Finance and Board of Selectman have scheduled the Capitol and Operating Budgets Referendum for Tuesday, May 14, 2013 from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM at Henry James Memorial Middle School located at 155 Firetown Road.             

As approved and recommended by the Board of Finance, residents will be asked to approve a Board of Selectman budget of $18,347,575 and a Board of Education budget of $64,918,869.  Appropriations for the Sewer Treatment Plant, Simsbury Farms/Special Programs, Debt Retirement and other appropriations totaling $12,847,975 will also be included in this referendum.            
The Board of Selectman budget increased by 1.71% and the Board of Education budget increased by 1.89% as compared to the previous year.  Both budgets include additional pension contributions to cover the cost of more conservative investment earnings assumptions.             

Projects specifically approved by the two Boards include critical maintenance projects and public safety-related projects, such as the replacement of outdated boilers at Squadron Line School, roof repairs to Town buildings, the stabilization of the Farmington River stream bank and emergency generators for the town shelters. 

Other approved projects include a truck wash for the Department of Public Works trucks, design developments to help assess the cost and location of options for a new senior/community center, and improvements to the Town center consistent with the recent Charrette study results. Residents are urged to vote on the Referendum on May 14th.
