Simsbury Close to Recovery After Hurricane Sandy

Only one percent of CL&P's customers were without power Thursday afternoon.

Submitted by the Town of Simsbury

With the Town’s public schools open for business and 1% of CL&P’s Simsbury customers without power at 1:00 p.m. today, the Town of Simsbury is moving closer to full recovery from Hurricane Sandy.  “We’re glad to see that power outages have dropped from 41% to 1%,” said First Selectman Mary Glassman, “but we remain concerned for the 191 customers who still don’t have electricity.”  Residents still without power should be sure to update CL&P with their outage information by calling 1-800-286-2000.  “It’s critical that CL&P has customer tickets for all of those still without power,” said Glassman.

The Town’s Social Services department is providing hot meals for residents at Eno Hall on Hopmeadow Street.  “We want to make sure that our elderly residents and those with special circumstances have hot meals and a warm place to sleep,” said Director of Social Services Mickey Lecours-Beck.  “If you need help or you know somebody who needs help, please call us at 860-658-3283.” Grocery stores and gas stations are now up and running throughout Simsbury and surrounding communities.

Town officials today submitted a preliminary summary of costs estimated at $35,000 incurred during the response to Hurricane Sandy to the State of Connecticut’s Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (“DEMHS”), which will determine whether Hartford County municipalities are eligible for FEMA reimbursement.

“Once again this community has come together to take care of one another during a very difficult time,” said Glassman.  “The neighbor to neighbor initiative – a collaboration between Social Services, community organizations and individuals – allows us to reach close to 7,000 people and ensured that we could look after the most vulnerable of our neighbors.  I would like to thank everyone involved in that initiative, as well as all of those on our emergency operations team who have brought us safely to this point.”The Town of Simsbury’s Storm Information Hotline update is attached.
