Simsbury Democrats Nominate Candidates for November Election

An enthusiastic Democratic Town Committee unanimously nominated a full slate of candidates Wednesday night, including First Selectman Mary Glassman.

Also among the candidates are current selectmen Lisa Heavner and Shannon Knall and newcomer Jay DeVivo. Also seeking positions for the boards of Finance and Education are some familiar names — Jeffrey Tindall and Linda Schofield for the former and incumbents Chris Kelly and Tara Donahue Willerup for latter.

Before nominating a full slate of candidates, Alan Needham, chair of the search committee, said he was excited about all.

"They're smart, they're qualified, they're interested and they want to be part of what we're trying to do," he said.

The candidates unanimously endorsed Wednesday include.

  • First Selectman — Mary Glassman
  • Board of Selectmen — Lisa Heavner, Shannon Knall and Jay DeVivo
  • Board of Finance — Jeffrey Tindall and Linda Schofield
  • Board of Education — Chris Kelly and Tara Donahue Willerup
  • Board of Assessment Appeals — Susan Ersinghaus
  • Planning Commission — Alan Needham, Jonathan Laschever and Thomas Kyzivat
  • Zoning Commission — Emil Dahlquist, Kevin Gray and Steven Kapiloff
  • Zoning Board of Appeals — Dennis Fallon, Katie Martin, Elinor Englander and Stephen Ersinghaus
  • Library Trustees — Jan Beatty, Joy Himmelfarb, Kathryn Rogers and Gail Ryan
"Simsbury has continued remarkable achievement in responsible economic development, fiscal control, and town planning during Mary Glassman's tenure in office," party chairman Amy McLean Salls said in a prepared statement. "Today, Simsbury is enjoying a fast-growing number of new building permits after the adoption of new, clear zoning regulations that are welcoming to developers. We are topping the lists of best places to live and educate our families, and we're doing it all while keeping budgets flat. That's no coincidence. These things happen with strong local leadership and cooperation of elected officials."

Glassman touted the town's AAA bond rating, recent budgets, bike friendly status, numerous accolades in publications and surveys and more.

She and others also thanked the candidates for stepping forward and said the campaign would be a lot of work and was an important one.

"The next two years are critical," she said.

The Republican Town Committee is set to endorse candidates on July 23.

Election Day in Nov. 5, 2013.

The Democratic party is hosting several events to meet the candidates including an ice cream social on Monday, July 22 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Tariffville gazebo. Non-perishable food items accepted for the Simsbury Food Closet.
