Simsbury Schools Closed Wednesday as Town Recovers from Sandy

Simsbury students will have one more day away from the classroom as the town recovers from the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy on Monday.

As of 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday there were 4,202 CL&P customers reporting an outage in Simsbury.

According to a notice sent to parents, Superintendent Matthew Curtis has canceled school again on Wednesday as crews work to restore power to two critical points in town.

"The town is currently 41% without power due to some significant damage in two locations leaving several of our schools without power at this time," Curtis said. "Due to the magnitude of the storm, CL&P has been unable to provide guidance on potential restoration timeframes as they are still in the process of surveying damage state wide."

Video footage shows the damage that caused thousands of power outages late Monday night.

"It is not likely based on the feedback received to date that the school buildings would be powered in time to open tomorrow morning," Curtis said.

The town has not opened Simsbury High School as an emergency shelter but town officials are reassessing the situation.

Curtis assured parents that schools would open as soon as safety was not an issue.

"I recognize how inconvenient this is for you and your families and know that we are looking forward to returning to normalcy as soon as possible. Our top priority is to ensure safety, feasibility, and appropriateness of opening schools following this significant storm."
