Town to Hold Senior Tax Relief Q&A

The application deadline for the program is May 15.

With the tax filing deadline approaching, the town of Simsbury hopes to increase awareness about the senior tax relief program and the changes currently pending board of selectmen approval.

Deputy First Selectman John K. Hampton will hold special office hours at the Simsbury Senior Center on Wednesday to discuss senior tax relief and answer any questions seniors have about the town's program, according to a statement.

“We have discovered that so many of our seniors do not even know that Simsbury has a program that offers credits to senior citizens who are within certain income brackets.  It is critical that we get out into the community to educate and inform folks," Hampton said in the statement.

Hampton will be at the Blue Room at Eno Memorial Hall, 754 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury from 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21.

Hampton co-chaired the 2012 Senior Tax Relief Subcommittee, which forwarded an enhanced program to the Board of Finance for review. The program was approved and forwarded to the Board of Selectmen for consideration on March 26.

“I think that a lot of seniors are concerned that any income information that they share with the town when they apply for relief is not kept confidential; we want to assure them that any data provided is private and strictly confidential,” added Hampton.

Individuals can apply for the current program up until May 15.
