What's Open, What's Closed During the Christmas Holiday

Christmas is an official federal holiday.

December 25 is Christmas Day. State and local government offices are closed and mail will not be delivered, but some businesses are open. Because the holiday falls on a Sunday, state and local offices will be closed Dec. 26. For most Federal employees, Monday, December 26, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes as well.

  • Simsbury Town Hall: closed Dec. 26
  • Simsbury Public Library: closed Dec. 24, 25, 26
  • Simsbury Public Schools: closed Dec. 26 – Jan. 2
  • Banks: closed Dec. 26
  • U.S. Post Offices: closed Dec. 26
  • State government offices: closed Dec. 26
  • State courts: closed Dec. 26
  • Liquor stores:
  • Christmas Eve (Saturday, 12/24): Liquor stores and grocery stores with beer permits may sell during normal hours. Bars, restaurants and cafes may serve until 2 a.m. 12/25.
  • Christmas Day (Sunday, 12/25) and Monday, 12/26: Package stores closed both days, grocery stores may be open but the sale of beer is prohibited.
  • Christmas Day (Sunday, 12/25): Restaurants, bars, cafes, casinos (food must be available) may serve as permit allows for normal operation.
  • Supermarkets: many open, check hours
  • Retail stores: many open, check hours

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP)  announced that all of its administrative offices and state park museums will be closed on Monday, December 26, 2011 as a result of a state holiday. While DEEP business office locations will be closed, state parks will be open in accordance with their normal schedule. DEEP administrative offices that will be closed both dates include:  

  • Main Offices, 79 Elm Street, Hartford
  • Marine Headquarters, Old Lyme
  • Session Woods Wildlife Headquarters, Burlington
  • Eastern District Offices, Marlborough
  • Western District Offices, Harwinton

The following state park museums and visitor centers will be closed on Saturday, December 24 and Sunday, December 25:

  • Dinosaur State Park, Rocky Hill
  • Gillette Castle, East Haddam
  • Fort Trumbull State Park, New London
  • Harkness Memorial State Park, Watertown
  • Kellogg Environmental Center, Derby
